What are insects?

Insects are found everywhere
on the planet even in the water!
There are more thanone million
different kinds of insects, which
make up about three-fourths of
all known animal life on Earth.
Scientists think that there may
be many more insects in the
world that have not been
discovered. All insects belong to
the class of animals called insecta.

Even though there are many
different insects, they all have
similar body features. Insects have
no bones. An insect's skeleton is on
the outside of its body. This is called
an exoskeleton. The exoskeleton
protects the insect's muscles and organs.
Every insect's body has three parts: a
head, a thorax, and a abdomen. The insect's
antennae, mouth, and eyes are on its head.
Insects have very special eyes that are very
different from human eyes. They have many lenses,
which allow them to see things we would need a
microscope to see. They are called compound eyes.
The thorax is the middle part of an insect's body.
it is where the insect's wings and legs,if it has them,
they are found. All insects have six legs, but not every
insect has wings. The abdomen is the lower part of an
insect's body. Food is digested in the abdomen. Insects
may come in many different sizes and shapes, but all
insects have these parts in common.

Did you know that insects have no lungs.
Many insects breathe through special
holes in their exoskeleton.
